THE MAORIS IN GAOL.

New Plymouth, Monday. The natives arrested for ploughing Mr. Courtney's land are to be brought before the R-esident Magistrate to-morrow morning, nnder the Maliciouu Injurious to Property Act, 1567, and tried. If they are convicted, they will be sent to another part of the colony to serve their sentence. The men are divided into two sections in gaol, and are separated from the prisoners. The young men do not seem to mind the punishment, bnt the old natives are very sullen. A young native, when asked what he thought o£ his position, laughingly replied that he expected to be taken up the first day they ploughed. An old native said, "We are only the branches; we are following Te Whiti's orders. Why do you not take the trunk of the tree V To this remark the o'id man got the answer, that we intended to tap the branches and take the trunk afterwards.
