TE ARAI: MANGAWAI, WHAU, &C.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I wish to relieve Mr. Brown of the serious charge of which he speaks in your issue of the 7th inst. The £500 referred to was obtained by the late Council therefore applies to his predecessor. If I did not say " late Council," I intended to do so. If Mr. Brown had but slightly taxed his memory he would have remembered that the subject of that grant was disous3ed at a public meeting before his election. Mr. Brown says, if I think he is indifferent to the interests of the district, I am mistaken ; yet, he says he did not give much heed to the letter of the Chairman of the Mangawai Board, which subject he is well aware is of thegreatestinterest to the district. He further asks what caused the telegram from Wellington, if no one moved in the matter. Any one reading the opposition shewn by the Council would never have come to the conclusion that that body had moved in its favour, as it fell like a bombshell amongst them. If Mr. Brown claims any credit individually, there must be some mistake, as the Chairman of the Mangawai Board claims the sole credit for writing to the Government, and obtaining the promise of a grant for a wharf. Hence the cause of the telegram. lam aware that the £500 for the Matakana wharf was obtained by the .Rodney C. C. before Mr. Carrie's election. The money has been spent in the riding which he represents since his election, consequently there is not much grounds for his ridicule. It appears to me there is nothing so foolish a'i men pooh-poohing and trying to ridicule truth when they cannot find grounds to argue against it. There is no work in the country so much needed as the Manga wai Wharf, and the settlers do not intend to let the subject drop. Mr. Cutforth says the money was granted for roads, not wharves. I would ask that gentleman what he considers the appropriation for the Mahurangi River Koad work.—l am, &c, D. Shannon. Te Arai, June 21, 1879.
