COURT OFPETTY SESSIONS.—Tuesday. LBefore T. Ma.ffarlane (Chairman), G. M. Mitford, H. C. Marte.ll, and J. McElwaio, Esqs., J.P's.l Drunkenness.—Two persons were fined for this offence. Vagrancy. —Henry Frederick Webster Colaou was charged with a breach of the Vagrant Act, by having no visible means of support. Prisoner said he had sixpence, but he would not take up the time of the court, and would plead guilty. Mr. Pardy said the police prosecuted the prisoner out of pity. Sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Stealing a Sovereign.— Alfred Wilcox was charged with stealing a sovereign, the property of Henry Colquhoun, on the 18th inat. Mr. Laishley appeared for the prisoner, and pleaded not guilty. Mr. Pardy stated that the informant was lying drunk in one of the public-houses. He would, by permission of the Bench, withdraw the charge. Prisoner was discharged. Charge of Assault.—A charge of assault, preferred against Henry Coe, was, on the application of the informant, William Coe, withdrawn. friTONK - throwing. — Prior Home, for throwiog.stones in Victoria-etreet, was fined Is and costs.—John Kenny, for throwing stones in Victoriaetreet, to the daDger of property, wa'i fined Is and costs. Collarless Does.—Alfred Mace, for not having a collar on his dog for the current year, was fined 10s and costs. — Abel Fletcher, for allowing hie dog to be at large without a collar, was fined 5s and costs.— Hugh Fergusson, Abel Stevenson, Edward O'Meara, and James Craig were fined 5s and costs each for a similar offence.—James Kirk, for allowing hia dog to be at large without a collar, was fined 2a 6d and costs. The Cattle Ntjisaxce.—Michael Routledge was charged with depasturing six cows in Richmond Road and Brown-street, Pontcnby. Defendant said he was driving the cows. They were not feeding. Constable Jones deposed that defendant's cowe were grazing on the road. He watched them twenty minutes. Thomas Lake depoeed that he saw the cows feeding on the side of the footpath. Fined 40s and costs. —Oakley Mooney was charged with driving cows on the footpath in Richmond Road. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Constable Jones deposed that the defendant waa driving eleven cows and one bull in Richmond Road. Defendant was playing with other boys, and not looking after the cowa. They subsequently went on the footpath. Thomas Lake deposed that he saw the defendant driving the cows on the footpath. Richard Warburton, for the defence, deposed that he was assisting the defendant in driviug the cows. They were uot on the footpath. Cross-examined by Mr. Pardy : Hβ was behind the cows, and could not see if the front ones were on the pathway. Fined £3 and costs.—Elizabeth Jennings pleaded guilty to depasturing three cows on unenclosed land, off Upper Unionstreet. Fined £1 10s and costs. An Unattended Cart.—Thomas Evans was charged with leaving his cart unattended in Albert-street. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Constable McLennan deposed \ that he saw the cart standing in Albertstreet. The wheel was not chained. Constable Abraros corroborated the evidence. 1 Peter Walker, for the defence, deposed that he and the defendant were standing under a ! verandah, out o£ the rain. Cross-examined J by Mr. Pardy : He was up the yard, and could not see whether defendant was attend- '. ing to the cart or not. Fined 10s and costs. —Walter E. Westleak, for leaving his cart unatterded in Wellesley-street, was fined : 103 and costs. j Obstructing the Footpath and Street. , —Nathaniel Close was charged with ob- [ structing the foootpath in Queen-street s by , depositing goods thereon. Fine 20s and , costs.—Henry Smith was charged with laying building material, to wit, bricks, in j Wellington-street, and not causing the same , to be properly lighted, on the night of the ' 12th inat. Defendant pleaded guilty, and ; was fined 20s and costs. . A House at Large.—James Wittles, for • permitting his horse to wander at large, was lined lOd and coate, Charg kof Assault.—A charge of assault against Jobn Mclntyre was, on the application of Mr. liaishley, who appeared for the plaintiff and defendant, withdrawn. ! Contempt of Court.—Abel Fletcher was charged with contempt of court. Prisoner apologised to the Bench, and was dismissed. Hiding on the Footpath.—Richard Featon pleaded guilty to riding a horse on the footpath in Weliesley-street, and was lined 10s and costs. The Court of Petty Sessions then adjourned till Thursday to deal with a special case.
