The inquest on the Athenieum tire, so far, has established ground of suspicion against Cummock, the acting librarian, but no direct evidence of incendiarism is obtained. A warrant was issued prior to the inquest against Cummock for the embezzlement of the f unda of the Institute, but he has not yet been arreeted. At the Bankruptcy Court yesterday, Judge Williams suspended the certificates of Wm. and Edward Downes for three years, and advised that they should bo prosecuted for fraud. The bankrupts removed a considerable quantity of goods before the bailifis took possession of their premises. A meeting of the creditors of Chalmers Reid has been held, and the conduct of the debtor was characterised in strong terms. The chairman referred to him as "a babe in years, and an ancient in iniquity." His liabilities are £RSS3 ; and assets, according to the debtor's estimate, are £3435. Amongst the liabilities are £125 to Bishop Neville, and £238 to the Rev. Southam. Several large amounts wers received for purchase of shares, and the agent appropriated the money. The chairman asked how it was that the debtor, having received large sums for investment, and failing to account for the disposal of the same, should make a statement to the creditors that he had no money. On the advice of his solicitor, the debtor declined to answer any question put at the meeting, and a resolution was passed instructing him to file his schedule. The Education Board find it necessary to take strict measures against the cramming of the attendance-rolls. Another case has come to light in which the attendance was falsely represented, and in the case also, the teacher's three children — the oldest not being three years old—were marked down as Bcholara present every day of the quarter. CHRISTCHURCH, 1 uesday. Mr. S. Bradley, station-master, Lyttelton, ■was kngcked down by the aide of a truck today, and was badly hart. His head was cut and his back severely injured. The funeral of Mr. Walter Hill took place to-day, and was largely attended. Amongst those preseDt was the Mayor, Several benefits are already spoken of for his widow. Mr. Hill's life was insured for £300. At the Police Court to-day, a youngster was charged with stealing thermometers from the Meteorogical Sta'ion in Hagley Park. He was remanded for sentence, turning out, as usual, to be a lad with whom his parents could do nothing, who already had been sentenced three times. At Port Chalmers to-day a man named Anderson, a passenger by the Arawata, was charged with an attempt at suicide by trying to jump overboard on the passage. He w≥3 remanded for medical examination.
