The first of a series of entertainments in aid of the new reading-room fund, which had been postponed from the 6th instant, was held on Friday last, in the public halL The evening was beautifully fine, and the attendance large. The first part opened with an Ethiopian extravagance, entitled, " Mischievous Jim," by Messrs. F. Lorigan and J. Coutts. The songs, step-dancing, and negro wit were well rendered, and called j forth rounds of applause. Mr. Popples followed with a song, " Timothy Baggs," which deservedly obtained an encore. Messrs, Ewing and Kirkpatrick were quite at home in the little farce, " Two Gentlemen in a Fix," and created much mirth. After an interval of ten minutes, Mr. Middleton sang, with his usual ability, " The Army and Ifavy," which received a most emphatic encore. A negro farce, "The New Prims) Donna," ably acted by Messrs. Tomperley, F. Lorrigan, and W. King, brought down the house, and concluded the first part. The hall was cleared for dancing, which was maintained with spirit until after midnight. The Wesleyaus at Russell hold a soiree on Thursday last, and the day being beautifully fine coupled with the low price of tickets —half-a-crown return—in the ferry steamer Ida, admitting to the soiree and ball as well, induced many from Kawakawa to visit Russell, and they were highly delighted with both the tea and the trip. Mr. Selfe expects to finish the new schoolhouse this week, and the bachelors of Kawakawa propose to give a ball in the large room on Friday next, before the desks, <fcc., ars fixed. A large number of invitations have been accepted, and, should the weather permit, a very pleasant evening is anticipated. —[Own coJrespondent, Juua 17.]
