WRECK OF THE CUTTER ANNIE. THE S.S. PATEA ON THE WANGANUi B \R. [by telegraph, press association.] Wellington, Saturday. The barque Australian Sovereign, bound to Lyttelton, which ran into the harbour through stress of weather, dragged considerably, but fortunately got good holding ground close to the beach, aud rode eafely. It was impos-ible to see her during the day, owing to the spray and heavy mist. Several other vessels dragged slightly. No vessels have been able to leave port during the severity of the gale. The steamer Wanganui, from Lyttelton to Wellington, experienced a terrific gale, which carried away the foreyard and blew the foresail to ribbons. Pilot Holmes Btates that the sea at the Heads was the heaviest experienced for twelve months. About a square yard of the sea-wall of the Wellington and Hutt railway was washed away. No damage was done on shore. Wanoanoi, Saturday. The Captain of the St. Kilda reports that, when entering the river, last night, about 11 o'clock, he saw a two-masted steamer bumping heavily on the bar with the sea breaking over her. He could not say definitely what steamer it waa, possibly tho JTui. The steamer Manawatu has gone to issist. The cutter Annie is now under watsr, and will become o total wreck. The steamer on the Spit is the Fatea, Captain Gibbons. He t >ld the cap'.ain of the Manawatu that the vessel was all right, and n'ould get off with the night's tide. A heavy gale is blowing.
