ONEHUNGA BOROUGH.
Tub ordinary meeting of the Council was held on Monday evening. Present: The Mayor (T. G. lilakey), Messrs. Codlin, Earle, Hartnett, Hastie, Jackson, Neilson, and Waller.—A letter was read from the Public Works Office, positively declining to maintain the portion of the main road passing through the Borough out of the tolls. Mr. Jackson said the toll-money was 4 Provincial asset taken over by the Governpent, and should justly be chargeable with the Liability for repairing the road for which the toll was levied, and the town of Onehunga was a. large contributing body.—lt was agreed to interview Sir George Grey or Mr. Sheehan on bheir next visit to Auckland.—A letter was also read from the Colonial Secretary, covering a '°P7 o* letter from Mr. J. D. Jackson, with :oferonce to an alleged illegal expenditure on a private street. A warm discussion ensued, but ici action was taken.—The endowments committee reported in favour of providing a fe -v nejessanes for the block house, and also for the jrection of three gates, affording access for the i public to this small but beautiful pleasure ground of six acres. Tenders were ordered to ' 5e called for.—lt was also agreed to lease the ! narket reserve of three acres by public auction or a term of seven years, and to lease the [razing of Mount Smart reserve of 32 acres by fender for one year.—With reference to the :laim of the Borough to the endowment selected inder instructions in the Patutahi block, it was 1 greed to reply to the repudiating letter re- 1 eivei from the Government, to say that the 1 Council would take the necessary steps to lay fc grievance before the House of Represent!- 3 ives by petition.—[Own Correspondent.] t
