Electoral Notices. rpo THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF AUCKLAND WEST. Gentltmex, —Having received a numerously signed Requisition asking me to allow myself to be placed in nomination for the Seat in the House of Represcata tive3 lately vacited by my father, I have, in view of su:h requisition, and of the assurances of support held out to me, determined to solicit your suffrages. "Whilst thanking the gentlemen who have Interested themselves in the matter for the confidence thus reposed in me, I feel I ought not to allow myself to be placed in nomination without giving a clcar expression of my views upon, at all events, the question which at present appears to be prominently occupying the public mind, namely, ° The Education Question," even if by so doing I may deprive myself of the support of such of my friends as do not think with me upon this subject. Although fully admitting that the system of National Education at present in force in this Colony has preved itself to be a marked improvement upon the systems existing prior to the Education Ac', ISTLIasi nevertheless of opinion that the present Act does inflict a hardship upon certain portions of the community; and, on that account, if the question be brought forward in the Assembly, I shall (if elected) feel bound to support any motion for a re-consideration of such grievances, not doubting but that such a compromise may be effected as may remove the cause of dissatisfaction which now exists, without impairing the efficiency of the present systom of National Education. In conclusion, I may state generally that I shall (if elected) give my cordial support to the prosent Ministry, so long as they pursue their present liberal and wise policy. I am, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, PETER DIGNAX. Auckland, February 2G, 1579. rj\ O THE ELECTORS OF CITY WEST. lu seeking your suffrages on the present occasion, 1 do so so!e!y io the interest of Education. Having no stroDg desire to enter the House cf Representatives, I was willing to support any uan hoMing the same views as myself on tint subject, but no such man offering himself, I feel that I should not bs doing my duty if I did not accedc to the request made to me, and allow myself to be nominated to fill the vacancy in the representation caused by the retirement of Mr. Dignau. My advoexcy of undenominational education is not new, for when returned by your constituency as a member of the Provincial 00-incil, I was elected as a iu; porter of that system, and I have never since seen any reason to alter my views. On other subjects, I will excrc'se an independent , judgment, and if you honour me with your conttdcnce by election, it will bs my earnest endeavour to justify your choice.
