AN ASTOUNDING DISCOVERY.

discovery is reported by a newspaper ' Chicago, the Pall Mall Gazette states, to have been made by a Mr. Stempel, of iat city, which eclipses not only the electric but telephones, phonographs, and all ie other womlerful iuventions of the day, >. Stempel proposes not only to light, but so to heat and furnish water power for the i hole of the United States by one immense ; id magnificent scheme. At Igh tide the floodgate nearest the land shub. Six hours after, at ebb tide, the gate ' the outer basin is closed and thus Mr. tempel will have one great basin full of ater. Smaller gates in the wall of the rst basin are then opened, aud the water ishes through, turning as it runs a thousand lrbine wheels, which in their turn keep in :otion the electrical machines from which is proposed to generate sufficient elecicity to furnish the entire country with ght, heat, and motive power.
