The New Zealand Shipping Company announce through our advertising columns the sailing from Lyttelton on or about April 10 of the magnificent Clyde-built steamer Stad Haarlem, 2729 tons register, and 450 horse-power. The steamer is the pioneer boat of a direct line of powerful steamers between these colonies and London, and is expected to accomplish the run in 45 days, via Cape Horn or Magellan Straits. She is reputed to possess excellent accommodation for all classes of passengers, and we trust the efforts to sustain this direct communication with the old country will meet with the support of the whole of the colony. Full particulars of freight and passage can be had at the company's office, Queen-street.

THE R.M. S.S. ZEALANDIA. The above steamer, from Sydney, arrived in harbour a few minutes pa3t midday yesterday, making a rather longer passage than usual. She brought numerous passengers for this port, and 37 in transit for Honolulu and San Francisco. The vessel encountered strong head winds on the voyage across; hence the unusual time in making port. She came into harbour in splendid order, and, we are glad to see, better patronised than has been the case with the company's vessels of late. "We are indebted to the purser, Mr. Macdonald, for late Sydney papers and the reports. The Zealandia left Sydney on January 30, at 2 p.m., and discharged pilot at the Heads at 3.57 p.m. Sighted the Three Kings at noon on the 3rd inst., and rounded North Cape at 3.30 p.m. At 6.15 a.m. on the 3rd, passed t&e s,s, steering west,

and at 2.45 a. in. sighted a steamer steering tf.W. Moderate weather and variable winds throughout. The It.M. . s.s. Zealandia sailed shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday for Honolulu and San Francisco. "We are glad to see that she received a considerable number of passengers at tbi3 port. H.LftLS. ARIADNE. The announcement we made a week or two that oar harbour would shortly be visited by a 'representative vessel of the German navy, was verified early yesterday morning by the arrival of the steam corvette Ariadne, (Captain Von Werner, from Apia, Samoa. The vessel has been a considerable time cruisin" among the Island* of the South Pacific, having succeeded the Hertha r.nd Augusta, two vessels that will be long and favourably known in this port for the many friends the officers and crew made while they remained in our midst. The Ariadne has come to Auckland to receive orders from home, and also to refit and provision, and is therefore likely to be in harbour from three to four weeks, a space of time that will recruit the health of the officers »nd crew necessary after so long a cruise in the tropics. The Ariadne is a barque-rigged, composite vessel of 1.105 tons register, and engines indicating 2100 h.p. Although nofconoofthe latest models of the German navy, her armament is of the most modern construction, she being supplied with eight breech-loading guns from the celebrated factory of Ivrupp and Co. She has a complement of 250 men. and the following are the officers Captain Von "Werner, Captain* Lieutenants Sebciin, Gcisder, Noes Von E-en-hecic, Lieutenants llornutig, Burich, Goieke, Essman, Von Zulow, Sub-Lieutenant Ivriog, Dr. Beuda, Paymaster Wachmann, Engineer Soydel. The vessel left Apia on the 25th, with light weather, was two days uuder sail, and steamed the remainder.
