VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

NEW ZEALAND RIFLK ASSOCIATION -THE AUCKLAND COMPETITORS. The Government having abolished the Colonial prize-firing, an association was formed in Wellington for tho purpose of resuseitatiDg it. A subsidy has been granted by the General Assembly, and a programme and prize-list is now being settled, the hr«t meeting taking place at Nelson in March next. The difference between the new and the old systems is that formerly a certain number of Volunteers, chosen by competition, were conveyed to aDd from the scene of the firing at the Government expense, whereas now no provision whatever is made in that way, and every competitor must not only defray all his travelling expenses, but purchase ammunition, pay an annual subscription and entrance fees, and even is compelled (in this district) to purchase a rifle, or shoot on very unequal terms with his Southern brethren. In order to somewhat relieve the Auckland Volunteers from this burden, a subscription, list was opened, and owing to the liberality of his Worship the Mayor, the ex-Mayor, and various other city gentlemen, a fund has been raised sufficient to defray the passage money and portion of the expenses of the competitors from this district. Two matches have been fired to determine who these shall be, the three highest infantry and the two highest carbine scorers to be the Auckland representatives. These matches resulted, after a most interesting and exciting contest, as appears by the following scores :— INFANTRY. FIRST MATCH. 260 4CO 600 yils*. yds. yds. Tl. D.
