THE REGATTA: PAYMENT OF PRIZES.

The committee of the above met last night, at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Queen-street, to distribute the prizes won at the late Regatta. The various competitors mustered in large numbers, and the large room was crowded to excess. Mr. "Von dor Fleyde (chairman of the committee) presided, and before proceeding to the more interesting poxtion of the programme —the distribution of t'he prizes,—said that he was glad to meet them once more at their annual gathering, inasmuch as the late sports were, without doubt, the most successful that had ever taken place on the waters of the Waitemata. Although several protests had been received, he was sure that the decisions of the umpire, Mr. Marshall, would be accepted in an honourable spirit, as all would testify that that gentleman had given his decision on the aide of that which was just and equitable. All could not secure prizes, but the love of fair-play which distinguished the nautical men of Auckland was such that the defeated would take their beating in a proper i manner, and come forward next year with the determination to do better. The Chairman ; then called upon the winners of the various , races, which were as follows :— j Champion Schooner Race.—lst prize, £100 to | owner, and chronometer, presented by Mr. | Marshall, to master; 2nd, £30; 3rd, £10. — , Adah (owner. Maraval, 1; James Wishart, At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Chairman called for cheers for the various winners, which was heartily responded to by all present. —Mr. Von der Hoyde, iu a complimentary manner, referred to the onerous duties of the umpire (Air. Marshall), the starter (Capt. Nearing), the treasurers (Messrs. Henderson, jun., and Dacre), and tho secretary (Mr. E. W. Burgess), tho whole of whom had worked iu a most efficient manner, and to whom tho successful issue of the Regatta was due. Tho toast was received with "three times three." — Mr. Marshall responded, and stated that ho had done his utmost to give his decisions in an equitable and just spirit, and although in one instance his verdict might not meet with the approval of a few, yet he had done what was strictly honourable, ami in accordance with the rules of the club, and he was, therefore, prepared to abide by it. With respect to the of the chronometer, he had regretted that it had not been won by a larger vessel than the Adah—ono that had more use for it; yet next year ho might be induced to give another, and he would stipulate that it should be awarded to a sea-going vessel.—Mr. 15. W. Burgess, the secretary, i th.mked those present for the flittering manner in which his name had been received.—The health of Captain Dearborne, the commander of the flagship City of Sydney, was received with acclamation ami drunk in bumpers.—Mr. Oxley, representing the competitors, then proposed the health of the chairman, Mr. Von Der Hoyde, iu a complimentary manner. The toast was drunk with " three times three," and ono more for the "little ones," to which Mr. Von Heyde replied, and the meeting then dissolved. —The winners of the cups and prizes, however, invited the company to toast the crews of the successful boats in bumpers of champagne, «fcc., ! and Mr. Gallagher for a short time was kept steadily engaged in meeting the demand upon his celebrated vintage of " Moet's." With reference to the 9th race, Four-oared Gigs (uo outriggers), amateurs, we stated that, at the close of the race on Wednesday, tho Aucklaud Club had eutered a protest against the first boat, Kumea (Ponsonby), on the grounds that the crew of the latter were not amateurs, in accordance with tho rules of tho Regatta Club. This was sustained by the committee, and they have received the following letter from Messrs. Russell and Devore on behalf of tho Ponsonby Club :— ,4i Auckland, 31st January, 1879.—Th0 Umpire and Committee Auckland Regatta Club. Gentlomen,—We arc instructed by tho Ponsonby ! Rowing Club to state that, as thoy have heard the umpire will give his decision in rei ference to tho protest entered against competitors in the ninth race of the late Auckland ! Regatta, the four-oared gig race by amateurs", at 8 o'clock this evening, and that the prize will ;be then paid over, consequently tlio Ponsonby Rowing Club will not have any time for consi- , deration of such decision, or producing evidence ;in support of their protest, before such deci- ; sion or the prizes arc paid over; they, thereI fore, with great reluctance, give the committee jof the Auckland Kcgatta Club due notice that j should the decision of tho umpire be adverse to | the Ponsonby Rowing Club, this club will hold I the committee responsible for the amount of I such prizes, it being the intention of the Ponsonby Rowing Club, in tho event of the decision of the umpire being adverse to the Ponsonby Rowing o'lub, to test the matter in a Court of Justice, and the Regatta Committee are requested and cautioued not to pay any of the prizes in such race to the Auckland Rowing Club pending further inquiry into the matter. —Yours, truly, Russell and Dbvoke." The owner of the yacht Energy, who issued a challenge through our columns yesterday to the winning yacht Pluenix, will find a reply to it in our advertising columns, and is requested to be present at tho Cosmopolitan Hotel at noou to-day, where the owner of the Phcenix will be present to arrange terms. The Gth race, for open sailing boats, allcomers, will take place today at 2 p.m., over the same course as on Wednesday. Should it blow hard, we would suggest that Mr. Frasor, in the s.s. Rotoiti, accompany the competitors round, seeing that the little steamer was of essential scrvice on Regatta D ty. The eighth race, for outriggers, was postponed on the day ef the Regatta in consequence of too much wind, aud the committee ordered the race to be pulled at 9 a.m. yesterday. Three boats catnc forward, tho Madge Wildfire, Mercury, and tho Zoo. It was well understood that it was a gift for the Mercury (White Bros.), so that little interest was taken I in the event, and the x*esult was not disappoint- ' lug, the victors never being asked to pull, j Captain Nearing acted as starter, and Mr. Marshall as umpire. At tho lowering of the flng all got away well together, but the Mercury speedily shot out and led the way. Abreast the Daphne the Madge Wildfire swamped, and the crew were picked up by the Zoe, the Mercury returning to goal with a splendid stroke.
