The t rigantine Active, from the Islands, went alongside the ship Loci; Fleet yesterday, to tranship her cargo of copra for London. The schooner Minnie Hare sailed for Whangaroa yesterday, and will there load with timber for GUborne. The Union Co.'* s.s. Wanaka is expected to arrive in harbour from Coast and (Southern ports about 1 a.m. to-morrow. The barque C-iherfeidh cleared at the Customs yesterday, and will sail for Newcastle, N.S.W., in bdlast. Th<s following passengers will proceed iu her: Messrs. Andrew Wilson and J. Campbell. The schooners Gol.len Isle and Ruby, and cutter Magic arrived from Russell yesterday, each with a cargo of coal. The barque Bella Mary, from Hobarfc Town, with passenger.? and a cargo of jams, timber, kc., arrived in the Channel shortly before mid- « night on Tuesday, and came up the harbour yesterday morning, berthing on the western aide of the main wharf. She left Hobart Town on the 2Sth ult. with a S. »V. wind, which lasted for two days, when it set in from the North until the 3rd inst. It then hauled to the E. and S.E., continuing so to the 13th, when the Three Kings were rounded, Down the coast fresh S.W. breezes, making Tiritiri a little before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, and the harbour yesterday morning. The schooner Hover sailed yesterday for Parua Bay and Whangarei, with a cargo of sundries. - A slight collision happened m the harbour at 11 o'clock lajt night, which, although heard on the wharf, proved not very serious to the craft, but somewhat endangered the lives of the occupants. The yacht Zodiac was sailing out in charge of four boys, without any light ahewißg, and when off the end of the Railway Wharf the p.s. Annie Milbaok was coming in under easy steam, and before she could alter her course sufficiently to clear the small crafc the steamer struck her on the port bow. One of the lads, named Shane, who was forward in the yacht, tried to bear her off, but the force of the* collision was such as to send the yacht from under him, and he was left hanging on to the steamer's topsail, whence be was hoisted on board. 4. couple of Press boats shortly afterwards put off, and, on reaching the yacht, found she had been struck about midships on the starboard side, but shewed no damage there, while on the port aide a couple of planks were sUrted, through which the water filtered freely into the boat, fcbe was at once towed up to the hard. Lloyd's Scholarship.—We learn with satisfaction that the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty have accepted an offer from the committee of Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping to establish an annual scholarship of £50 a-year, tenable for three years, to be competed for by private students of naval architecture, being British subjects, at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Candidates desiring to compete must enter the College as students either of naval architecture or of marine engineering. The examination will include the elements of mathematics, including the differential and integral calculus, of statics, dynamics, and hydrostatics, geometrical drawing* practical shipbuilding, or practical marine engineering. There 'vill be two examinations for this scholarship—the entrance examination, and a further examination, for those who pass the entrance, us laid down for competitors for the Admiralty free studentships. The candidate standing first in order of merit will be awarded the Admiralty scholarship, and from among the remaining candidates will be selected the holder of the Lloyd's scholarship, who must stand first in naval architecture or in marine engineering. We hope and believe that the prospect of securing this profitable distinction will stimulate students entering the Royal Naval College to honourable effort, and to aid in raising the character of that excellent institution. These surmises turned out correct, for when the steamer shewed round the North Head, shortly before midnight, and our reporter went, alongside, in answer to the query, the information was given that the after crank pin had broken, or the vessel should have been in by 10 p.m. on Monday, as they were only 400 miles from Auckland. From the orlicial report of the passage it will be seen that up to the time of the accident the vessel had eclipsed all her previous performances, averaging 301 miles per day, a rate of speed not accomplished hitherto. The steamer has brought forward a large complement of passengers and cargo, as per the lists. Kept ship under srtil until January 14, hiving had light wiuds from N.E. round to N. W. and W. to S.W. Having secured the crank pin temporarily, as well as could be done at sea, at 1.30 p.m., January 14, started ahead at the rate of five knots per hour ; from thence fine weather to Auckland, where we arrived on January 10, at 12.15 am. Up to tlie time of the accident the engine never uvrked better, —the ship having Averaged 301 miles a-day for 17 consecutive days from San Francisco,—smi silmost unpaialleled run. Owen and Graham, and from our telegraph board.
