THE New Zealand Herald. AND DAILY SOUTHERN CROSS. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1878.

The principal item of interest which we publish to-day in our English cable messages is that relating to the veiy serious depression of trade, through the recent financial crisis in Britain, and the consequent distress among the working classes in the home country. At present there appears to be little prospect of a return of confidence in commercial circles, and we can therefore scarcely look for a revival of business in the manufacturing districts. By the papers to hand by the tho last mail from England, we were informed of the large redactions which had been made in the number of persons employed in various industrial establishments in both England and Scotland, and this collapse in trade appears to have brought very serious distress in many districts.

The wool market shews a slightly improved tone, ancl towards the close of the sales prices were firmer. Fortunately there are no more failures recorded.
