TARANAKI RACES.
[by telegraph, pep. teess agkncv.] New Plymouth, Thursday. The Taranaki race 3 commenced to-day. Thf weather was wet in the early part, but cleared about noon. A large number of persons were present, and the meeting was a success. Handicap Hurdle Race. Mclvens's Grey Momus, 10st. 131bs. (owner) X Campbell's Bully-for-You (Potts) ... ... 2 Palmer and Edwards's Awahou (Edwards) ... J War Eagle, Little-thought of, and Billy also ran. Betting : 6to 4 against Grey Momus, 2 to 1 against Bully-for-You and Aw.ihon, 5 to 1 against War Eagle, and 10 to 1 agai»Bt the others. The horses got off well at the first attempt. Grey Momus, Awahou, and Little-thought-of came into the straight run in the order named. On taking the top corner, Bully-for-You raced into second place, and from this point all interest was centred in the two leaders, it being clear that none of the others stood a chance of beating the pair. Grey Momus won by a length and ahalf. All the horses jumped well, and there was not a baulk at any of the j hurdles. Time, 4min. 36smcs. Maiden Plate. VaTaaour's Jecasta ... ••• J J. Paul's Chanticleer J. Day's Forest Queen •> Taxation, Marion, and Catch-'em also ran. Forest Queen declared Gibs, over Jooasta. Betting : 2 to 1 against Chanticleer, 5 to 1 against Taxation, and 10 to 1 against the others. All started well together, Chanticleer jumping off with a strong lead. Marion, Jocasta, and Forest Queen following in the order named. These positions remained unaltered for Sk complete round of the course, when Jocasta raced up to the leader's girths, and the two favourites raced away from the others. Vavasour's mare got on level terms With Chanticleer. In risißg tho hill, Paul's horse came into the straight, ana ran with a slight lead, but half-way up the distance the mare not fairly iu front and was never headed, and won by a length and a-half, Forest Queen third, about four lengths behind second. Handicap ; loOsors, Folly I Izxak "Walton •• * Otawa ... ... ... ••• •• * Hippocampus got the best of the start, and. mada the running, with Otawa and Folly in aloeti attendance. Otawa led passing the Stand the first time, Xzaak Walton running into Becond place. Ran in this order for abont half-a-mile, when Iziak Walton deprivsd Otawa of the lead and led for the next half-mile, Folly being a good third. Folly gained upon the leaders, and when fairly into the straight, challenged Izaak Walton, and after a tremendous struggle, won by a short head, Otawa, a length behind, being third.
