THE GOLD FIELDS.

[FROM 018. OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Thames, Saturday. Queen" of Beauty Extended.—The drive 011 the small leader in the Queen of the May section has been extended about 60 feet beyond the poiut where the last winze holed through from the No. 5 level. The country is tight .saudstoae, and but slow progress can be ma le in it. The leader looks well, bat is vei y small, and in some places it is almost pincued right away. There are three parties stoping by contract on the leader. In some parts of the stopes the lode is about eight inches thick, and yields good crushing dirt, Sinking the company's shaft V) the level of the Piako No. S has been let by contract at 50s per foot. The contractors are making good progress with the wurk, and it will not take long to reach the required depth. There is a large quantity of water ruuniug in, but it all escapes through the bore hole and drains off to the *.Yaio-Karaka pump. The manager has started drivihg on t:ie large lode cut iu the Piako low level. About ten or twelve loads have already been broken out. Tue air in the face is still very light, and it is with the utmost difficulty tue meu can work, aud a fan has to be kept constantly going driving in fresh air. The battery has been standing for the last day or two, but a fresh start will be made on Monday or Tu-Ja lay, when tue stuff obtained from tue b:g reef wdl ba operated upon, and if it yields as well as the trial lot put through last mouth, additional interest will be given to the mines in this part of the held. übuglien and party, who are working a block iu the City of London section, have just finished a crushing of 33 loads, for the moderate yield of -lOozs. l'idwts. melted gold. This is considered barely payable. They are now busy taking out another parcel, and a3 the stone has a bettor aud more healthy appearance, they anticipate a profitable return. Wilson and p irty are busy opening out a block on the No. '2 level. Yesterday some good colours of gold were seen in the stone.

New North Devox.—A commencement has been made running down quartz to the battery, and crushing will be started the tirst thing on Monday morning. Victor?, Karaka Creek.—Tke proprietors of this claim have crushed a parcel of 63 tons, for the fair yield of 79ozs. 14dwts. melted gold.

Hape Creek.—Tetley and party obtained 39ozs. melted gold, the result of a erushing at the company's battery. Watchsiax.—George and party are busy opening out each way on the lode, which continues to maiutain its large size, and enables them to keep 10 head of stampers fully employed. Tue lode is split up into several veins of rirst-class quartz, but the whole of the stuff from footwall to hangingwall is forwarded to the battery, where it is shaping for aa excellent return. MoAN'ATAiAfti. — Retorting for the company took place to day. During the last fortnight some 300 tons have been crushed for the return of 24'jozs. retorted gold. This is a considerably better average Chan the previous tortuight. Several of the tribute parties have n-ul crushmgs which have given payable

i.-.1. mi ■■■ i. AUCKLAND GOLD MIXING COMPANY. A meeting of the directors of the Aucklaud Gold Mining Company was held on Saturday, at Mr. 11. Home's office, te consider the following report, submitted by the undersigned. It was resolved that a special general meeting of shareholders should be convened for Monday, the 17th, to confirm the purchase of the Diamond lease as recommended in the report. The Directors of the Auckland Gold Mining Company, Limited. In accordance_ nith a resolution passed at the lust directors meeting, we have visited the Thames mid completed the purchase of the Diamond Licence for the sum of £50, £50 when the licence is pr inted by the Warden, and 5301 shares in ;he company. The ground contains 8 acres o roods 18 perches, or 27 men's ground, is situated between the Clunes and Watchman claims and adjoining the Alburnia, and can be worked with great facility and to good advantage from either the Middle Star or Sons of Freedom low levels ; it can also be worked from the present. Watchman tunnel, about 400 feet from the mouth of which is the Wateiimau reef, which in that ground is turning out exceptionally well. The Middle Star low level has been put in a distance of 50 to GO feet pa.-t their boundary into this greund, and at the end of it a leader was cut, supposed to be the hangingwall leader, which turned out very rich at the top level, but was missed in the two next levels. As work was suspended by tli.it company just when the leader wm cut, nothing whatever was done on it, and it will pruh.tbly turn out well when opened ou. Tue Alburnia leader, according to survey, traverses about 300 feet of your ground, and cm be worked advantageously either from the Cidiies or Ailuirnii drives. A large reef, known i,s tne I'orc U aikaro reef, ruus through the wiiuie itii-i.il i,f the greund. from which (in p.acc.-l iieh returns li ive been obtained from a vein in the This reef c_>uld be worsed with adv.mta-e from the Middle Star winze, which is connected with the low level. Ihe underlie ot the Sons of Freedom reef also runs through the whole length of the ground, and could also be worked from either the Sons of i ree hmi or .did ue .Star low levels, which are 1> at the mouth, but being driven in owferent directions, aa-e 400 feet apart at the face, ilefore commencing operations, we would suggest obtaining the opinion of the Ih.imes shareholders en the most judicious mode of working the ground, as we believe the ground wul pic- long, under careful management, p.iy handsomely. —We are, kc., John A. Clark, Director. J. Hokne, Acting-secretary.
