THE GOLDFIELDS.
[FROM ODR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Monday. Piako. —The battery is shut up for a short time, and the retorting has proved the gold of good value, but not enough of it; only S2ozs. being retorted, which melted to Sooz3. 12dwts. Work in the bottom level is continued. In driving towards the Queen of Beauty and seaward, as well as following ou the foot-wall of the reef as it trends away from the main body to the north-west. The cross-cut towards So. 1 reef progresses from the north side of the shaft; it is expected to be reached in about 15 feet further driving. Operations in the upper in the stopes have been stopped, but these with other portions are to be let on tribute, nine such sections are now open for tender. Th*: uDper portions of the Bird-in-Hand are to be connected with No. G level from the Piako shaft by a new wiu/.e ; this will add to the facility for forwarding quartz, and the battery wil! resume when the works are a little more advanced. THE RETURN FOR THE MONTH. The amount of gold from the 19th nit. to the 15th inst., is lioOlozs. from 4010 tons of stone.
