THE GOLDFIELDS.
[FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. Kura.vui Hill Tribote.—McLeod and party crushed 18 tons at the company's battery for 310Z9. of gold. Jenkins and party crashed 20 tons for 13ozs. 7d\vts. gold. Rising Star Tkibijtb.— George and party put through a trial lot of 2 tous for 107. 14dwts. of gold. It is sufficient to induce them to forward a large parcel for crushing Oli> Whai).—The trihuter Foster has lodged lewt. of specimens in the Bank of New Zealaud, obtained from the continuation of the Alburnia specimen leader. Alburnia.—The quality of the general stone obtained from the drives and stopes is but poor, and has induced Mr. Gribble to suspend crushing for a short time after the battery is cleared. In the meantime, progress will be made with the intermediate levels from No. 2 winze, and a large quantity of better stone obtained from the drive on the specimen lode, as well as east and west from the larger reef. There is a considerable quantity of specimens and picked stone on hand, and before the end of the month the stone to be sent will bring np the return to a satisfactory yield. The block up from the 35 feet depth of winze is good, and contains a large amount of first-rate crushing stone. Caledonian.—The locality of the present find of gold is within the Otago section of the mine, which, by-the-bye, was not included within the securities handed over by the Caledonian as their portion towards the loan of £50,000 granted by the Government, the Caledonian share of which is about £12,000. Since the mortgage was executed the County Council have raised other £10,000 upon the said securities. As the Otago Company failed to discover the gold when only a few feet from it, it is just as likely that the Caledonian have missed other strikes of gold both in No. 1 and No. 2 reefs. There are stretches of reef within the Caledonian which have been never prospected and nothing known about them beyond their having been intersected. It is quite likely that the present prospecting on No. I reef by Mr. James, both in the upper and lower levels, may lead to valuable discoveries.
