Considerable anxiety was evinced last night by numerous passengers intending to proceed to the Thames, owing to the nou-ap-pearance of the s.s. Rotomnhana, which left the Thames at noon, and was advertised to return to the goldfields immediately 011 her arrival here. Several hours were spent 011 the Wharf by many persons without seeing anything of the steamer, and it was concluded that some mishap had occurred. As the s.s. Durham was timed to arrive from the Thames about 10 p.m., everyone was on the qui vivc to ascertain the cause of the non-appearauce of the s.s. I&otomahana. Ic appears, that when ofE the Sandspit about p.m., yesterday, one of the bolts fastening the connect-ing-rod brasses to the crank .-h-.it gave way, which had the effect of causing the piston to break the cylinder cover. As soon as the accident was discovered, an anchor was let go, in order to await the arrival of the s.s. Durham, which was expected to pass on her way to Auckland. At 0.30 the Durham was seen, and noticing the predicament of the s.s. liotomuhana steamed alongside and took oil the passengers and brought them up to town. Captaiu Moon, acting chief oflicer of the Kotoinahana, also came up for the purpose of talking to the scene of the misadventure, the new steamer Kotciti, in order to tow the disabled steamer to the sivharf Tl.a Mnfoi#? A correspondent from Cabbage Bay, under dat(f of December 11th, states that the cutter Sydney, Harold master, went ashore on Friday, tho 7th inst., a short distance to the north of Cabbage Bay, and became a total wreck. The wind, which had been blowing stiff from E.N.E., suddenly veered round to the west, and a very heavy sea setting inshore, the cutter commenced to drag. Notwithstanding the most strenuous exertions of the master and crew, assisted by several persons from the land, she went on the rocks and became a total wreck, the men, unfortunately, losing the greater portion of their clothing. She is the property of Captain Souter, of Grahamstown, and is believed to be uninsured.
