NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS. [I'ROM OUK OWN CORRESPONDENT.J WELLINGTON, Friday. A CONTRADICTION. A circumstantial story 18 published here, that, before le&viug yestt:rtl:iy, riir George Grey recommended the Governor to appoint I Mr. Bunny Commissioner of Annuities, and also a Justice of the Peace, as that officer has constantly to be taking declarations ; that the Governor at once expressed hia willingness to make the departmental appointment, but declined to make Mr. Banny a magistrate, as that was a prerogative act ; and "that thereupon a scene took place between Sir G. Grey and the Governor. The whole story is a pure invention, probably concocted with a view to bringing about what it professes has already occurred. It is perfectly understood that Mr. Bunny is to get this appointment ; but no step whatever has been taken by Ministers to niaks it, and the subject has not even been mentioned to the 3overnor. In fact, it has been left over till the Premier's return to deal with, as only matters of urgency were taken up before he went away. MR. BALLANCE. [PRESS AGENCY.] NAPIER, Friday. In the Supreme Court last niglit the jury returned a verdict of uot guilty in the case of G. P. Donnelly, charged with horsestealing. WELLINGTON, Friday.

To-night's Pott says :— u It is rumoured tliat another difference of opinion arose yesterday between the Marquis of .Normanby and Sir G. Grey, which delayed the Hinexnoa some hours. The gist of the statement is this : Ministers having decided to recommeud the appointment of Mr. Bunny, M.H.R., as Commissioner of Annuities, Sir G. Grey signified the same to the Governor in a memorandum. The ollice being one which necessitates the constant making of statutory declarations, the holder ought necessarily to be a Justice of the Peace. The Premier, therefore, further recommended that Mr. Buuuy's name should be placed on the Commission of the Peace ; that both appoiutments should appear in to-day's Gazette. On this point the difficulty arose. The Marquis of Arormanby approved of the appoiutment to the Commissionership of Annuities, but demurred to putting on the Commission of the Peace. Sir G. Grey maintained that the Marquis of Isormanby was bound to accept the recommendation of his constitutional advisers. The Marquis of Normanby held this was at his own discretion, as part of the prerogative of the Crown, and that while willing to make the appoiutment he would not also place the name on the roll of Justices of the Peace." The Pout adds:— " Something like a scene then ensued, the result of which was that Sir G. Grey quitted Government House in hii»h dudgeon, " KUMAKA, Friday
