RUSSIANS CROSSING THE BALKANS. THE TURKS EVACUATING PHILIPOPOLIS. FEARS FOR A MASSACRE OF CHRISTIANS. DEFEAT OF SULEIMAN PASHA. [press agf.ncy.J LONDON, July 27. A Russian force has crossed tho Balkans at the Iron Gate Pass, and reached Jamboli. Suleiman Pasha remain;; at Adrianople. The Russian troops are evacuating jPhilipopolis. The gravest fears are entertained that the Christians will be massacred in Stamboul. The Consuls are applying to the Ambassadors of tho Powers to intervene. Tho Sydney Morning Heralds special telegram says : —" It is believed a crisis is imminent, owing to the rapid advance of theßussians toAdrianopl.?,in consequence (if the defeat of the advanced guard of Suleiman Pasha's army." BOMBAY, July 28. The mail steamer Tanjore has arrived at Galle. The Erio strike has ended. The Australia, with the London mails of the 'iSth June, sailed from San Francisco for Auckland on the 18th July, contract date. The City of Now York, with the New Zealand mails, leaving Auckland on the 4th instant, arrived at San Francisco on the 2Cth. Tho Zealandia, from London to Rio Janeiro, was badly damaged by collision. Sailed : Wakatipu, Saturday. THE LOIS DON MARKETS. LONDON, July 28. Wheat, is firm. New Zealand, sos to' COs ; New Zealand flax, holders ask full rates. The quantity of wool admitted for tho nest sale is 308,205 bales, and includes arrivals per Opawa, Hurunui, City of Auckland, Rakaia, Waipa, AVaitotara, May Queen, and Adamant.
