Parliament was mostly engaged during the week, discussing the Railway Construction Bill, it having been decided to rush it through as speedily as possible, as other colonies were also proceeding with contracts, taking away contractors and men. Only one petition has yet been decided by the Elections Committee, and tuafc was in favour of the fitting member, Colonel Joseph Anderson, a Peninsular hero, and aged SS. Governor Jervcis has been very ill, but is new Blowly recoveriug, though still unable to perform any duty. The cable remains interrupted between Penaug and Singapore. The West Australian liue is expected to be open for traffic by the end of next month. Jn the libel case agaiust the proprietors of the Police News, the jury were unable to agree. 2s o date is fixed for the fiuancial statement. Probably it will not be made until after the Railway Bill is disposed of. Weather cold with heavy fogs. Market dull; breadstuff's firm.
