ROADS NORTH OF AUCKLAND.

Tub economical expenditure of tiie balance t)i the Government grant toward-? the completion of main lines is oon that will not f *il to engage the earnest attention of the County Councils, into whose hands the distribution of this money ha 3 now been very properly placed. If this be judiciously done, it will be the means of connecting the c.unities together, encouraging settlement, promoting trade, stimulating industry, and bringing the populations into closer and more frequent communication, and alliancc with each other than hat hitherto been the case. The importance of this cannot be over esti mated, anil in no better way, we think, can this be accomplished than by laying ou; the money now available, so that the benefits may be felt by the many, and not by the few. Scattered as man}* of our country settlers are, the access to a main line, were it but a good bridle track only, would be only a question of timo, and one that the Road Boards would in their several district- 1 , and iu their turn, seek to connect also wherever practicable. We understand that something like £10,000 has been allotted to the different County Councils north of Auckland in equitable proportions. Wo would desire to impress upon the minds of members of the councils the importance of turning to the best account what now remains of the original vote, not a little of which, we regret to find, has hitherto been unprofitable spent. We further think that the County Councils have it now in their power, by acting in concert, to connecttogether the principal settlements throughout the North, not by metalled roads or exbridge*, but by economically opening a line of way through the country which shall, for th-j present, suffice to meet the pressing requirements of those of our settlers who are practically isolated, and thus ur gently claim our attention and sympathy.
