.- -■ -. , .o. . . " - i AUCKLAND CRICKET CLUB V. .WEST ; !' END CRICKET CLUB. ! This match was played in-the Domain- on l Saturday afternoon last, and aa time'only allowed of one innings a-Bide being played, the Auckland Cricket Club were declared the' victors by 45 runs. The West '.End. captain having won'the toss, took his'men into thefield, and Blackett. and BluniUn went, first to the wickets to face the bowling - of T. Macky, and Gleeson. These batsmen made a good stand, and with steady,. judicious play, raised the score to 22, when Blunden gave an easy - cafcoh to thebowler. ■ Cotton . .fpllowed, and put together, a* somewhat lucky' 10 bafore he • was .bowled '.by T. Macky. - The -same bowler ' shortly after, disposed of Blackett, who had an excellent innings for 16, comprising ; a fine drive for' 4. Mowbray and Abraham thenbecame companions,' and' the play exhibited by them was . a treat' to the ori-lookers, both Bhewing a strong defence,, and : heavy punishers of loose balls. ' Mowbray, and subsequently Ward (a very promising young a* er, especially with the bat), were both y run out by Abraham, .otherwise the - score -of'the Auckland Cricket Club' ,wbuld" have certainly exceeded 100. The rest of the eleven, s with one*exception, added 'their quotas ci from 3to 6 each, and Abraham waß .the last to' succumb to a trimmer fro'm T. Macky, "after scoring 16 by some excellent play, and the Auckland Cricket 'Club innings closed for 86. The captain of the West Enders and'Gleesonthenopened-the innings for their side, to the bowling of Buckland-and Cotton. like their, opponents, these batsmen began well, 1 and rail up the mam -»&{ud]p„.natil .tant ttia htt.ll from Cotton,-when <j; Maoky unfortunately ran himself out, after » good innings of 13, and Gleeson soon followed, by giving an easy catch to Ward ; his 9 were all got in singles, shewing careful play. . The score now - stood at 25 for. the loss of two' wickets,- and 'the game looked well for the West Enders, but the round-arm slows of Blackett were too .. good for the remainder, and the last seven ' wickets-fell to that gentleman for 14 runs,, the total score reaching 41, or 45 behind their . opponents. We noticed four bad ' cases of " runs-out" during this match, and cannot impress upon players too much the necessity of studying tLis feature of. the game . more carefully in the future ; it is better at any time to lose a run than a wicket. The weather was all that, could be desired for criaket, and a goodly number of visitors took advantage of the same to enjoy the beauties of the Domain, and to encourage their respective friends in the match. The above clubs played their first match this season at the North Shore on Saturday last ; the weather was fine and the gronnd in good order, excepting that the grass was rather . too long for the fielding. Carlton won the toss,. and sent their opponents to. the wickets. Throughout the game there was no brilliant play on either side. Tbe bowling of Seccombe, for the North Shore, was very fast, hence the number (15) of byes credited to the "Carlton." At 5.30 the stumps were drawn, and left the game unfinished.
