MR. EWINGTON'S EXPLANATION.

TO THB EDITOR. Sm, In reply to reflections sought to be cast upon me at Mr. Wells' meeting of creditors, I can only say that it will be a bad job for any man when he has fallen so low that he must look to Mr. John Abbott for a character. His animus against me arises from my having warned a person against honouring a promissory note of S. Wells', which Abbott had "passed onto diffuse his risk." Respecting other matters, I may add that, when Mr. Wells sought my advice I urged him to get money from his mother to pay bis trust accounts, and, as a friend'of the family, I was, with others, prepared' to make any sacrifice to save Hβ honor and hie business. When this failed, he came to my house with a relative, late one nightj-and called me out of mjr bed,.and I then told him to go back to his relatives, who ■ had money, and say that unless he got help at once, the only alternative was flight or Mount Eden—"Lay the matter fully before, relatives in whom yon have_ confidence, and follow their advice." This was four days before he went away, and I never saw him to speak to afterwards, or knew positively that .he was going till just before he started, when told by a relative ; and if I had known, I should not have considered it my duty to have turned informer. Scores of people in Auckland knew as much or more of his affairs than I did, and why my name should be mentioned apart from a host of i others, I am at a loss to know. But my back is broad. I have acted only honourably and disinterestedly, and having advised him in a way which, if it could have been followed, would have saved his credit, his business, and his honour, I can afford to pass by the insinuations of those who reflected on me at the late meeting. One of his three solicitors advised him two months ago to ''make himself scarce."—l am, &c, F. G. Ewington.
