McGregor and others, and is intended to trade between Opotiki and Tauranga, in connection with the s.s. Eowena. Captain O. Baker, late of ihe Coralle, and well known on the coast, takes command. The steamer was built by llessis H. Niccol and Son, at the North Shoro, which is a sufficient guarantee that the specifications have been faithfully adhered to. The machinery wae constructed by Messrs Frasor and Tinne, of the Phcenix Foundry. In the trial trip yesterday the machinery worked smoothly. The propeller made 160 revolutions per minute, with a vacuum of 28 inches, and a pressure of 70 lbs. to the square inch. With this sho obtained an average speed of nine knots. The engine ha 3 a single cylinder 20 inches in diameter, "fitted with expausion valve and surface condenser. The steamer measures about 60 tons register, and has been built for a cargo boat, with good accommodation for a few passengers. The employment of this vessel in the East Coast trade will be another in- ■ stance of the substitution of steam for sailing vessels, and the requirement of euch a stoumer u further proof of the growing importance of a coastal trade.
