MONGONUI.

This district has at last awoke, and finds that while so peacefully sleeping, in full dependence on a .paternal; Government, some parents have gone off and left their too credulous children in the lurch. So we have had meetings both inside the township and outside the township, and resolutions have been passed, and copies sent to our representative, begging him to do his best; but X am afraid this comes a little too late. That this district has been most shamefully used no one could dispute, if they took the trouble to see for—themselves. We have most magnificent country, but unfortunately no roads to reach it, so intending settlers are disgusted, and return, as a rule, without ever seeing what they came to see. In consequence of the Government having surveyed a new road through Victoria Valley, so as to open up the country, (such was the statement,) the .Road Boards have done their best to make good the approaches to the same, thus neglecting their- old bridle track, which now, from neglect, has become almost •impassable, while the Government, after the survey, have let things stand in statu quo. So we have now no available road in good order. I enclose a copy of the resolutions passed at Oruru :— At a meeting of the settlers of the above district, held this day, the following resolutions were passed,—Mr. Adamson in the chair :—lst. Proposed by Mr. Wace, seconded by Mr. Wilkinson : " Whereas most parts of the civilised world are now connected by electric telegraph, and the present Government promised in session before last that this district, in common with the rest of the colony, should share these advantages, this meeting observes with concern that -no steps have been taken as yet to perform this promise." 2nd. Proposed by Mr. William Wells, seconded by Mr. Peniiy: u That this district is much kept back, and settlement rendered impracticable, by the neglect of the Geueral Government, in not completing the road through Victoria Valley ; for as the middle portion is left undone, intending settlers are hindered from viewing the large tracts of country unoccupied." 3rd. Proposed by Mr. Wilkinson, seconded by Mr. Blyth: " That the chairmau be requested to send copies of these resolutions to Mr. William?, M.G.A., and request him to forward same to the proper authorities; also beg him to endeavour to ascertain what portion of the £60,000 voted by the Assembly for roads north of Auckland is available for the district.—[Correspondent.]
