COUNTRY NEWS.

PAPAKURA. The annual meeting of the subscribers to the library was held on Tuesday, 2Sfcli inst., —the Hev. T. 2s T orrie in the chair. —The Secretary, having read the minutes of the last* annual meeting, reported that 43 volumes had been added to the library during the year, and that the contribution which had for a number of years been given by the Provincial Council in aid of libraries in country districts, not having been given during the past year, the committee had been precluded by want of funds from adding as many books to the shelves as they had wished, and that the committee would urge upon subscribers the necessity of punctual payments, as the non-payment of subscriptions prevented additional books being purchased. — The Treasurer reported that the receipts were £17 os 7d, and the expenditure £16 15s 6d ; balance in hand, 10s Id; and that the arrears of subscription were about £7 10s. The reports were adopted, and the outgoing officers were re-elected. The name of Mr. Shauaghanwas added to the committee. It was resolved that for the future all subscriptions be paid in advance, and no books should be issued unless the subscriptions were paid. If the Hunua Highway Board are not too busy, perhaps they would take a look round and see what our highways require to make them passable in the coming winter. While on this tour, they may remember that such an Act as the Weeds and Water Courses Act is in existence, and that it is neither conve- . nient to the passengers nor creditable to the Board that the footway, or rather where the footway should be, is one mass of gorse, and that persons to avoid the gorse have to go into cart-ruts. A little attention to this matter, and to the stopped drains and culverts, will not add much to the burdens of I this overworked Board.—[Correspondent.]
