We have received, per the Colima, Fiji papers. The principal subject of discussion in Fiji is,—Where is the seat of Government to be! 1 n the Supreme Court on Wednesday, the Chief Justice was engaged all day in hearing the case of Haynes v. Macfarlane, for the recovery of certain moneys alleged to have been placed in the custody of defendant by plaintiff at New Zealand, for transmission to this colony, and which had not come to hand as intended, through some business complications. Messrs. Forwood and Scott were for plaintiff, and Messrs. Truscott and Hetherington for defendant. His Lordship reserved judgment.— Fiji Argus, March 17. The report of Messrs. Tonks and 00. as to the value of maize in Auckland differs materially from that of Mr. Reid, also a produce merchant in that city. The former quote the artie'e as selling freely at 3s Sd and 3s 9d per bushel, the latter says it is neglected at from 2s Cd to 3s 6d. The account sales furnished to shippers will doubtless prove which statement is correct.— Times. Yesterday, the captain of the Llewellyn was fined 40s and co3ta, at the Police Court, for having gone too close to the hulk before his vessel had been passed by the Chief Medical Officer. The captain complains that he had not been furnished with a copy of the Quarantine Regulations, and thinks it hard that he should have been punished for the committal of an act, of the illegality of which he was unaware. We hear that at Kandavu natives have been brought before the stipendiary magistrate upon charges of violation of the Quarantine Regulations. This is teaching the Fijians law with a vengeance. — Times.
