RETURN OF Dβ. POLLEN. -' THE LATE MR: BEYNOLDS, OF CAJt BRIDGE. . [from our own correspondents.] TAURANGA, Monday. Dr. Pollen and Lord Phipps returned from the Lakes on Saturday, and sailed for Auckland in the Bevenue cntter Ringleader.

:The remains o£ Mr. Reynolds, o£ Cambridge, who died at Ohinemutu, were brought into town on Saturday evening, for interment this afternoon. Owing, however, to the absence of a clergyman, the funeral was postponed till to-morrow morning. Mr. Reynolds, with a party of ladies, was visiting the Lakes, and on arrival at Ohinemutu was attacked by typhoid fever. Every attention was rendered by the settlers and visitors, more especially by Dr. Pollen; but Mr. Reynolds sank fast, and died on. Friday morning. COROMANDEL, Monday.. The Harbour View: have over a hundred weight of rich specimens from their mine to-day. In the Black Reef, sinking is going on, through easy ground. . The freehold site of the Empire Hotel, having a 65 feet frontage and 150 feet deep, with the remainder of the building not burned, were sold by auction to-day, for £6,300. Mr. Jacob Joseph was the purchaser. It is stated that a movement is afoot to request Government to prevent civil servants, whether architects or engineers, from competing with those in private business. DTJNEDIN, Monday. Constable Henry Vernon, of Green Island, was found fearfully mntilated in the : Caversham, railway tunnel yesterday. The deceased was on duty at the race-course on Saturday, until half-past six. It is not yet known whether he fell'from the train or was run over when walking through the tunnel. He was considered a thoroughly steady and efficient officer. The total amount taken at the Knox Church bazaar amounted to £2000. A fire at Milton T .destroyed Atkinson's Commercial Hotel, stables, and outhouses. Another at Christie Farm, Upper Harbour, destroyed house, machinery, cows, and an entire horse. The loss is estimated at £1300. . . " An inquest on Constable Vernon will be held to-morrow. It is now supposed he was walking through the tunnel, not expecting the train. At the race meeting, the lessee of the gates insisted on charging reporters for admission, contrary to conditions of sale. Legal proceedings have been taken to obtain refund of a shilling paid under compulsion.
