Ban tow, Esq., K,lL] Mebchaxt Shtppiko Act.—ln order to oblige the captain of the Brodick Castle, who wished to bring his vessel alongside the wharf, this case was heard afcd disposed of before the usual business of the Court commenced. Benjamin iMiight and Joha McLean were charged with a breach of the Merchant Shipping Act, by wilful disobedience to lawful commands on board the ship Brodick Castfe, while on her passage from. London to Auckland. The captain stated the facts o£ the case. The prisoner McLean urged in extenuation that they had been ordered to work on Christmas I)ay, which they objected to, as it was a holiday all the world over. His Worship considered that did not alter the case. They should have obeyed the commands; not having done so, he sentenced each of them to four weeks' imprisonment with hard labour. Vagraxt Act.—Annie Carroll pleaded guilty to a breach of this Act by being the occupier of a. house frequented by reputed thieves, and persons having no lawful visible means of support. Inspector Broham said the woman had used the most abominable language to Sergeant Mulville when that officer was passing her house on the preceding evening. His Worship imposed a sentence of one month's imprisonment with hard labour.—Minnie Burke pleaded guilty to a breach of the same Act by having no lawful visible means o£ support. Inspector Broham stated that the girl's father had called on him repeatedly, in order to see if he could do anything towards inducing his daughter to reform. She was one of the worst of her class. Everything possible had been tried to reform her, but without success. His Worship sentenced the prisoner to six week's imprisonment with hard labour.
