THE GOLDFIELDS.

[FROM OUR OWX CORRESPO>TDEXTS.] Thames, Saturday. Middle Star Tjjibgte.— littlejohn and party crushed 12 tons stone for 12 ozs. 4dwts. 12 grs. gold. Moaxatairi. — The usual fortnightly crushing has returned 2400z5. lOdwts. retorted gold. The supply has been from all sources, but a new block on No. 2 shews a slight improvement in the quality now coming to hand.

Ped.ce Imperial.—A portion of this ground has been lefon tribute to Mr. Daykin, who formerly worked the Mariner's Beef, now incorporated with the Imperial. Mr. Daykin has succeeded in winning some 601bs. of choice stone, which on crushing at the Moanatairi battery, has returned 27ozs. odwts. melted gold. • ■ Crows Prixcess.—The official report on the progress made by Messrs. Ogle and Stocks since they commenced baling out the water from the Crown Princess mine, stands thus :—Thursday, 4 p.m., started the engine with two tanks, each! holding S4 gal-. lons ; continued baling to noon on Saturday, when the water by measurement shews 3 feet '4 irches reduced, leaving 4 feet 7 inches water above the flat sheets, the water being at that level throughout the lower drives. Yesterday, it was erroneously reported as S feet reduced. Tairt/a, Saturday. '. The Mining Inspector, Captain Goldsmith, has put the regulations in force at Tairua, [ by issuing notices of re-entry within ten _ days (from the 24th inst.-), upon the ground 1 comprised within the Puketui and Tairua Companies' leases. With respect to the former, no work has been done for months past, neither has any expenditure of machinery on building been undertaken. With re-: gardtothe latter, the company have expended: large sums in both machinery and buildings, 1 and have just erected a wire tram, connecting the mine with the battery, the battery having lately been working for an adjoiuing company, the Golden Arrow. Delays have arisen in working the mine, and also in transporting further machinery, so that progress in developing the mining resources of the property have not come up to the Inspector's idea of complying with the requirements. There are many other leases at Tairua which would be all the better for the attention of the Inspector, as if they were thrown open to the public, the present shareholders would be rid of an incubus, and prospectors would have encouragement to test the ground, which at present they are debarred from doing with any hope of benefit. I am informed that arrangements have been entered into to have the heavy parts of the machinery appertaining to the large battery now lying between. Tairua and Puriri,, conveyed back to Puriri, thence to Tairua via the East Coast j the whole plant to be on the claim in three weeks. The tramway starts conveying quartz to the small battery on Wednesday next, when crushing will be resumed. Mr. Neves and a party of men are actively engaged in getting out promising stone from the new find on the face above the tramway. [ GOLD RETURNS J7on the Week ended March 25, 1576.
