WHARF ACCOMMODATION AT GISBORNE.
Mr. M. Shera, Mr. Lodder, tho manager of the Auckland Steam Company, and Mr. Adair (of Poverty Bay), waited upon his Honor the Superintendent, Sir George Grey, yesterday. Mr. Shera stated that the object of the deputation was to bring under His Honor's notice the want of wharf accommodation at Gisborne (Poverty Bay). The recent heavy weather and .floods had done so much damage to the old wharf, that at present there was really no accommodation for .steamers. The want was a serious one, and •it was hoped that immediate steps would be itaken to remedy it. Sir George Grey fully agreed with the deputation upon the importance of accommodation for vesselsat Gisborne. There was, however, a difficulty of title in respect to this matter which would have to be settled before the Provincial Government would be in a position to undertake the work. At present the site upon which the wharf was built was the property of the General Government, as it had not been' handed over to the Provincial authorities. It was very necessary, however, that nothing should be left undone which would assist the rising district of Poverty Bay. ' He would at ouce communicate with the General Government, and would, upon receiving a favourable answer, go into the estimates, and do all that was possible to fully meet the views of the deputation and the wants of the district. The deputation having thanked His Honor, withdrew.
