THE GOLDFIELDS.

[from our own correspondent.] Thames, Thursday. Mr. Caktitew, formerly underground boss of the Long Drive mine, has received the appointment of deputy mining inspector for Ohineinuri gold mining district. The contract for driving northward from the G45-feet level of the big pump towards the Albion shaft has been let to Mr. Girvau, who for a long time has been employed in the shaft, and no doubt will fulfil his contract satisfactorily. This tunnel is in connection with the Kurauui Hill United, comprising the Albion, Kuranui, Shotover, and Long Drive Companies. Mr. J. W. Walker has been appointed manager of the new company. .During the execution o£ the low level Mr. Walker will turn his attention to the upper portions, and endeavour to utilise the ICuranui battery, now at the disposal of the new company, by obtaining crushing dirt of a payable character. Lord Nelson (Karaka). —Adams and party, continuing the low level, have cut through the icef, five feet wide, and gold is to be seen in portions of the reef. About 20 feet more has to be driven to connect with the shaft sunk from the upper workings, which, when reached, -will enable the ree£ to be stoped out, having 90 feet of backs to take out. Pumping Association.—The connection steam capstan engine and the boilers was completed yesterday, and a trial of the ■working parts of the engine took place, resulting in success. The capstan, with the necessary gear for hoisting or lowering into the shaft, is in a forward state, and will be housed in in a short time. Golden .Age.—Beehive tribute, Livingstone and party, crashed three tons at the Prince Alfred battery for loz. 2dwts. retorted gold. Little Agnes.—Crushing for the shareholders, Tyler and party, was resumed at the Missouri battery, Tararu, and maintains its character. Preparations are being made for the erection of two extra berdans, which will considerably augment the yield of gold. At the present the tailings are carried off by flnming to the Russell battery, where they will be treated by Mr. Darrow, who has nearly completed repairs to that mill, as well as erected new berdans.
