TRIAL TRIP OP TOE S.S. ARGYLE. The official trial trip of this screw steamer took place in harbour yesterday, before Mr Jobson, Government Inspector of machinery. The Argyle is owned by Captain McGregor, Messrs H. F. Anderson. J. S. Macfarlane, and D. B. Cruickahank, a few of the "Wanirarei merchants also having an interest in the screw steamer. She is rigged as a three-masted i schooner, similar to the lona, and hasbeenbuilt especially for the "Wangarei trade, having a flat bottom and a nice run fore and aft. She is constructed of Polmtukawa frame and heart of kauri planking 1 , and will register about 100 tons. Her dimensions are: Length of keel, 114 feet; breadth of beam, 20 feet 2 irches; depth of hold, 7 feet 6 inches; draught of water, 7 feet. Her draught exceeds what was intended, but a sacrifice has been made to give her one good roomy hold, suitable for the conveyance of cattle, the engines being placed aft instead of amidships. She has been creditably built by Messrs McQuarril and McCallura, Mechanics' Bay, the builders of the Boderick Dhu, and lier machinery was constructed by Messrs Eraser and Tinne, of the Phoenix Foundry. Her motive power is supplied by compound engines, with surface condensers of 25 horse-power, actual horse-power ICQ. The diameter of the cylinders are, 1G inches high-pressure, and 30 inches low-pressure; the stroke is 15 inchcs; the screw is forr-bladed, 5 feet 7 inches in diameter, and 9 feet pitch. Tho boiler is multitubular, 9 feet in diameter, and 10 feet in let gtb, and is mado of £ inch Lowmoor p'ate; there aro two furnaces. In the trial yesterday the machinery worked exceedingly well; a full head of steam was kept up throughout without any blast pipe, the engines going fu»l speed without the sligtest sign of priming or vibration. The revolutions were 143 per minute; pressure of steam, 70 lbs. In her performance the measured mile was run in C minutes 20 seconds with, and 8 minutes against tide.„averagic g knots. The distance from off CJ'ieen-street "Wharf to the Bean Rock Lighthouse (3£ miles) was accomplished in 17 minutes 20 seconds, and to Brown's Island in 33 minutes 30 seconds from the wharf, and 21 minutes 10 seconds from the lighthouse. From Brown'* Island back to the lighthouse 22 minutes 30 seconds were occupied, and to the wharf 47 minutes, against a strong ebb tide. Reckoning Brown's Island as distant seven miles, this would give an average speed of 10 knots; not so bad when only 7or 8 kuots were expected. We have already given a description of tho cabins, but may add that the accommodation is of a superior kind. Tho saloon ha 3 been tastefully decorated by Mr J. Henderson, and handsomely furnished by Mr J. Halyday, upholsterer. Eveiything* for passengers' comfort is supplied on an improved scale. The steamer's lifeboat is fitted with Clifford's patent lowering apparatus, made by Mr MtMillan, who also constructed aH the ironwork of the vessel. The saloon is amidships, with a hurricane deck above. Tho bridge is over the engine-room, and abaft the funnol. Tho steering apparatus is on the bridge. Tho vessel answers her helm remarkably well. The new steamer will be commanded by Captain E. Stevenson, late clref officer of the s.s. lona. Mr Laird will be chief engineer. At the trial trip yesterday the customary congratulatory addresses and toa3ts wore dispensed with, "drink to me only with thine eyes" being the order of the day. The trip ever, the steamer at once commenced to take in cargo and stores, and she left at 6 o'clock last night on her maiden trip to Wangarei, with several passengers.
