17th February :—" Wool sales opened with spirit at the level of last sales. The opening catalogue contained 6000 bales. Competition by both home and foreign buyers is active. settle up. They walked together to the Criterion Hotel, where Freeborn lodged. He then ostensibly went to his bedroom for his books. On returning he passed- through the commercial room to the back yard, saying to a person"who accosted him, " I'll be back in a second." In a few minutes afterwards a man, going to the water-closet, found Freeborn on the ground quite dead, with a shot wound on the right temple. He was unmarried. An inquest will be held tomorrow. The Christchurch District Drainage Board decided to-day to borrow £100,000, being part of the £250,000 intended to be spent in drainage works in Christchurch and suburbs. The money is to be borrowed for 50 years, at 6 per cent. Two shocks of earthquake were felt here and at Akaroa on Saturday, but so slight that few felt them. Mr. Campbell sold his entire thoroughbred Castaway for 500 guineas. The horse is not likely to leave the province. SERIOUS SHOCK OF EARTHQUAKE!. OAMAE.U, Monday. Further shock of earthquakes, but not serious, were experienced at 1.10 p.m. and 10.53 p.m. on Sunday, and at 1.20 this morning ; minor shocks continued uutil 4 a.m. Xo further damage has been done. The shocks in Saturday caused serious injury to the hospital chimneys, which were shaken down, and one patient thrown out of his bed. A meeting oE the Hospital Committee will be held this afternoon to take steps for the repairs of the building. Yesterday the earthquake was referred to from the pulpits of the various churches; and Mr. Gifiord, Incumbent of St. Luke's, hiutecl that if shocks continued, the service in one church might have to be discontinued. He also urged that the buildings erected in future should be so built as to meet the contingency of earthquakes. There is quite a scare here.

TIMARU, Monday. Another accident occurred here this afternoon. William Hecklin, a labourer, was buried by a fall of earth while doing excavating work in Cain's Terrace, and sustained, among other injuries, a fracture of the right leg. DUNEDIN, Monday. Davis, of Wilson's Circus, beat Drake, a pedestrian, at 100 yards race on the cricket ground. Drake then got a start given him, and won. Two thousand five hundred people attended Mr. Bright's lecture on "Free Thought" last night. It was listened to with great attention. Mr. Robert Stout took the chair. The s.s. Wellington came to Dunedin this trip, and probably all the New Zealand Company's steamers will.
