An amusing incident is related by the eipp's Land Mercury : —A farmer resident at Denison, on December 28, while on a stack of] hay, felt a sting on his leg, and at once ran home declaring that a snake had bitten him. He cut the piece out with a razor, and got his son to suck the wound for a full hour; but feeling none the worse, the part excised was carefully examined, and it was found to contain a small portion of a Scotch thistle. The patient was so chaffed by his neighbours that we forbear piling on the agony by giving his name." Once after Mr. Fox, of New Zealand, was turned out of office by an adverse vote, a Mr. Swan, the member for Auckland, asked what had been done by the late Government in the way of introducing English birds—the inquirer having been one whose vote helped to unseat Mr. fox. " The hon. member," said the latter, " wants to know, &e. I will tell him. We have now a plentiful supply of geese who think themselves Swans. We have introduced some remarkably fine greyhead sparrows with s walla w-tails—(looking hard at a well-known member on his right)— and we have the honour of having brought out a magnificent robin redbreast," waving his hand towards Sir F. D. Bell, who was endeavouring to look as dignified as he could in a bright scarlet waistcoat. Mr. Swan was satisfied.—" in the Australasian.
