AIUUVAL OF THE CYPURENEB. Tho R.XI.S.S. Cyphrenes, 12S0 tons, Captain T. Wood, returned to Auckland harbour yesterday shortly after noon, having delivered her mails to tbo s.s. City of Melbourne at Kandavu. Of hor passage, Captain Wood reports as follows:—R.M.S.S. Cyphrenes left Auckland on tho 19th December, and arrived at Kandavu at 245 a.m. 25th. Having received instructions to procccd to Sao i'rancisco, and finding tho "surface fracture" in tho propelling shaft in the same condition as when tho survey was held at A uckland on tho 10th ultimo, proceeded on to Levuka on the 30th to obtain a fresh survey and permission to procecd on, which, not being granted, returned to Kandavu on tho Ist January, whero wo found tho City of Melbourne, which had arrived a few hours prsrious. At once transhipped malls, cargo, and passengers to tho City of Molbourno at 2 p.m. on ths Ist January. Waited for the City of San Francisco till tho sth instant, when wo left Kandavu at 4 p.m. Sighted tho Great Barrier at 4 a.m. Passed Tiritiri 11 a.in., nud arrived at Auckland at 1 p.m. on tho 11th instant. Passed s.s. Llewellyn at 8 p.m. on tho 10th. Experiencad throughout tho voyago S.fi. and S.W. winds, with remarkably flno weather and smooth sea. We ara inbebted to Mr. H. HiUman, purser, for report of .passage and other favours. Of tho Cyphrenes' appearance in Loruka tho Fin Times ha 3 the following" yesterday morning, to our surpriso, wo observed a large steamer of over a thousand tons making for our port. She shortly afterwards entered tho harbour and dropped anchor. It was then found out that she was the Cyphrenes, ono of tho chartered mail boats of tho Pacific service, from Kandavu, and that her business at this port was to obtain the opinion of tho engineers of H.M.S. >'ympho as to tho condition of her shaft, which, we are informed, has alather extensivo flaw. During tho day a survey of hor machinery was made by the engineers of tho >yn»pli«, tho result being that she will return to either via Auckland or direct {as the commander may doterminoat Kandavu) at half or three-quarters speed. Had it have been deemed safe to proceed to San Francisco without tho likelihood of au entire breakdown of her shaft, wo boliove the commander of tho Cyphrenes would have proceeded to that port, as she is encumbered with the How Zealand mails and passengers on board. At about five o'clock last evening she returned to Kandavu. after allowing the passengers a good opportunity of inspecting Leviika, and recognising old, and perhaps, nearly forgotten friends. Mr. G. A. "Woods, the Company's agent, accompanied the ship Shortly after arrival in Auckland an inspection was made by tho Government Engineer of her machinery, and a permit granted to proceed to Sydney. She will leave, therefore, for that port at noon to-day.
