The Annual Cattle Show of the New Zealand Agricultural Society was held on 9fch Not., at the race-course, Ellerslie. The weather was most propitious, and in every other respect the show was a success. There wore a large number of exhibits in every department, and in some there was decided improvement upon previous shows. The arrangements for holding the exhibition were similar to last year; ample provision was made. Although the prizes were small in amount—the largest being a money prize of £s—there5 —there were so many given, that the committee disbursed a considerable sum of money in making the awards. In nearly every class there was very satisfactory competition, both in respect to number and quality. Thanks are due to the committee of management for the very complete arrangements made for holding the show, and for the systematic manner in which the very complicated business in connection therewith was transacted. THE DINNER. The usual dinner in connection with the Society's Annual Show was held in the large pavilion on the Ellerslie ground. About 150 gentlemen were present at the dinner. The chair was taken by his Honor Sir George • Grey, the President of the Society, who was supported on his right by Mr. Wm. Buckland, and on his left by Mr. J. M. Dargaville. Mr. Wm. Goodfellow occupied the vice-chair. The dinner, which had been provided by Mr. James Brown, of the Ellerslie Hotel, gave great satisfaction. ELLERSLIE GARDENS. The sports held at this popular place, passed off in a very successful manner, and the result must have been highly satisfactory to the gentlemen under whose supervision the different events were conducted. The first item on the programme, which had originally been fixed to start at 11 o'clock, was postponed to 12 o'clock, for the convenience of persons who wished to take part in the reception of Sir George Grey. A very large number of people were present during the day, indeed, at one time, there could not have been less than 1500 persons on the course. THE VOLUNTEERS. The members of the Auckland Artillery Volunteers, under Captain J. H. Burns, mustered in the Albert Barracks, about 9 o'clock, with their band, and fired a royal salute, the band playing " God Bless the Prince of Wales." After the parade the men marched through the town, headed by their band, playing lively airs. The band subsequently proceeded to the race-course, Ellerslie, where they formed not the least attraction of the Agricultural Show. The Naval Brigade were by announcement to have fired a royal salute from the North. Shore Armstrong battery injhonor of the day, but from an accident which occurred in cleaning the guns a day or two before the programme was changed. The brigade in good marching order left Auckland attended by their band for Brown's Island, where they held a picnic after due and ancient custom. A number oE the fair sex were present, and, assisted and enlivened by their band, a very enjoyable afternoon was passed. The company returned to town about half-past 7 o'clock in the evening. Several members of No. 3 Company took advantage of the public holiday to firo a sort of tentative match between the short Enfield rifles, and the service Sniders recently served out. Five members fired on each side, and at present the advantage seems to be on the side of the Enfields, but of course no definite result can be arrived at until an analysis of the scores has been made. The result of one member's shooting, which was carefully watched, shows that the Snider JB under a disadvantage only at short ranges, and at the longer ones is brilliantly successful but at present all results are viewed as doubtful, the perfect symmetry of the Boxer cartridge being seriously questioned,
