TERRIFIC HAIL-STORM. —ABOLITION, BTi ._ A terrific thnnder-storm passed oyer iere on Friday, the 13th inst. It came from the Kast Coast, over Port Albert and interme* r iate districts, and ■was accompanied by a fe.-rfnl downfall of hr.il; where it had drifted ag >inst high ti-tree, bouses, &c, it was three feet deep—in fact, quite np to a horse's belly —as was the case with Mr Lawrence's horse. The noise it made falling into the lakes was i lost peculiar; settlers were on the for their sheep and lambs, to keep th«m t'rom being buried in the hail. The average d-pth was, over a tolerably wide belt, quit IS inches. The size of the largest hailstones was about 2$ inches in circumference. It was the same at Mr. Pilkington's, of K-rth Albertland ; in fact, the oldest inhabit ..nts never saw anything like it anywhere in tieir lives before. It lasted from one o'clock till about 5 p.m. The noise on the shingle:, of the houses was deafening. I may mention that by far the maj< -ity for abolition, —being of opinion that .a simple agency in Auckland would b<; all that is necessary for carrying on the H ghway business. Proxy votes are not li led. There is no occasion for any great chiuige, as the public have only now got fan:-liar with the present Act. We appear to have nothing to do but to be constantly studying new Acts. Country folks are slow in acquiring complete knowledge of any .'.eta where a little intricacy is apparent. The collection towards a Church of 1 ngJand minister' 3 stipend is nearly complet-d. The decision in the trespass case gives evident satisfaction.—[Correspondent, August lo'.]
