EDUCATION BOARD.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board of Education was hold yesterday afternoon, in the office, Wyndham-street. Present ; Dr. Campbell (in the chair), Messrs. F. L. Prime, Lusk, Ball, R. J.-O'Sullivan (Inspector of Schools), and Col. Haultain. The following is an epitome of the business transacted :—

Minutes.—The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.

Matawheho.—The Secretary was instructed to inform Mr. Parsons that as soon as the committee can be legally elected tho appointment of Mr. Boulton as teacher will be confirmed on committee's application. Waiuku.—The payment of .t's 7s 9d was authorised to Mr. Chappell for extra services at the Waiuku school.

I'akaru.—'l'lic committee to be informed tliat the information about the site is not clear or satisfactory, and that the Boar.l are not in a position at the present to' increase the grant already made. TaJ'C. —The appointment was authorised of Miss Murray as pupil teacher, at a salary of £15 per annum, the appointment to date from Ist August. The secretary was requested to inform the committee that the Board do not- pay for repairs to teachsrs' houses not vested in the Board. £ Piako.—The proclamation ot the district was authorised as soon as the necessary description can be prepared, but it must be distinctly understood that the Board are not at present in a position to incur any expense for buildings. Mr. Roche.—ln reference to a letter from Mr. Roclio, respecting the leasing of Waikato reserves, the secretary was empowered to inform that gentleman that his suggestions will have due consideration when the sections are offered.

Waipu North. —Letter from the chairman asking for another school in the district. Board cannot sanction a school for only eight children.

Mr. Pitts. —Asking Board to see to the drain through reserve at tho North Shore, as it is now choked, and the adjacent sections are overflowing.—Deferred for further information.

Te Kofcru.—Secretary to inform tho Aratapu householders that the average attendance at the half-time schools has not, \ hitherto, warranted either being made full'i time. I Howick.—Committee to be informed that [ the application for additional £10 will have to be the subject for consideration hereafter. —The appointment of a teacher of needlework was authorised, at £10 per annum.

llautapu.—Proclamation of district authorised, but the Board have not a building fund available at present. Henderson's Mill.—Board approved of Miss Laurie as teacher, with salary on the terms named.

Whakaiiara.—Secretary to ask what boundaries the petitioners would recommend for the district; also, the time and place of meeting most suitable to elect a committee, if separate districts be proclaimed. Also, to inform petitioners that the Board are not yet in possession of the buildiug fund, but their application will be favourably considered. Mount Jloiisoy.—Asking £15 for rent of school from 14th June, 1875.—Granted, on the understanding that the money be expended in repairs of building. Whatawhata. —Asking for creation of district. —Further information requested, in accordance with the regulations. SurREME Court Site. —Letter from City Council asking that the sale of the Sapreme Court site leases might be defined.—Deferred, but held over for consideration of special committee. Reserves. —Letter authorising Pov.d to deal with the reserves.—The secretary was requested to acknowledge rcccipt. Matogakaramka.—Communication from teacher respecting supply of books gratuitously to pupils.—Secretary to inform Mr. Codgers that he and all other teachers are liable for the value of the books which they

obtain through the Board, and that they will be cxpected to pay for thorn when sold, in accordance with regulations, tho only exception being when the child supplied produces a certificate signed by tho chairman of the commitee and tlio teacher that the parents and guardians are absolutely unable to pay. Pcjkekoiie West.—Asking increased salary for assistant teacher. —Board cannot increase salary beyond tho regulations for the present. Maunoaturoto. —Asking £10 for fittings. —Granted.

Hamilton East.—Asking £15 for desks, &c.—Granted.

Wiianoaroa North. —Asking approval of Mrs. Johnson as teacher. —Approved. Wells kord. —Refer the letter to the committee. •

Hakrisville.—Report of the Tuakau Commiteee on tho application for a school at Harrisville received. —The Board regret they ara not in a financial position to entertain the application. Couomanhel. —Asking payment for services rendered as teacher of needlework.— Declined, no such appointment having been sanctioned by tho Board, nor any extra work done.

Herd's Point.—Appointment of Mr. Watkins as teacher approved on terms already stated.

Waiotahi.—Asking for a pupil teacher to tho Waiotahi Creek school.—Sanctioned, but appointment not to be made until approved of by the Board.—Also asking for an additional pupil teachcr to tho Shellback School. —Sanctioned, but appointment not to bo made until approved of by the Board. Waiuku. —Authorised payment of half the grant made to Maioro and Brookside schools for building purposes. Pukekohe West.—Tlio Board did not understand that Mr. Boose was to receive any of tho money granted, but that his account was to have been paid from funds in the district. Consideration of building grant for teacher's house deferred till the building fund is available. The Gf.nf.ra[.Regulations.—The Scholarships Committee was appointed to revise the general regulations, with power to act.
