OMAHA HIGHWAY BOARD MEETING.
To the Editor of the Herald. Sir, —In reading the account of the annual meetiug of this district, I liud that your own correspondent takes quite a different view from the majority of ratepayers in this district. Ist. I, as chairman, put it to the meeting if proxies were to be used or not; they agreed in the affirmative. 2nd. Then your own correspondent forgets to tell you, and, through you, the public, that the voting was by ballot, and that he was one of the scrutineers, and raised an objection to a proxy held b'y me and signed by a J.P., that J. P. being also a ratepayer. I was quite willing to give up the proxy, hut the majority of the meeting said it was to be used. Now, sir, the voting being by ballot, quite set me at liberty to use both my own votes and my proxies (have the scrutineers taken the place of chairman ?). As for me voting myself in, what were the other eighteen ratepayers doing to allow me to do that? Now, sir, he makes a great deal out of my journey to town last year, but he quite forgets to tell the difference in the amount received, —this year only £5, and last year upwards of £10. And if he had reported both sides, the public would know why Mr. C. S. Clark would not sit on the same Board with me; and in reference to himself and others proposed, as regards himself he will take no office except he be paid for it; and in reference to the rates, they arc fixed by the ratepayers, and not by me nor by the Board ; and, in reference to one who was at the meeting, you will see that your ruling is not quite right.—l am, &c, William Greenwood. Omaha, August 10, 1873. i •
