THE GOLDFIELDS.

[FROM OCR OWX CORRESPONDENT.] TiiAiiES, Wednesday. Old Wiiau.—The following is from the report of Mr. T. Scott, mine-manager:— "In the early part of last month I was stoping out a block of ground on the 50. 5 level, but it got very mullocky and pinched up, so I found it was requisite to stop working here, as I considered it was not payable owing to it 3 smallness. On No. 1 level I have got the main drive timbered up to the face ot the reef. The reef here shews a nice body of stone, being about ten or eleven feet in thickness, and it shews gold freely. According to what I have seen of it, I consider it to be good payable ground, and it will also afford a great deal of crushing stuff, but at present 1 am not able to do much work here owing to the excessive heat. After getting everything ready for a start, I found that a man could not remain in it longer than a qnarter of an hour at one time, owing to the heat, notwithstanding I have fresh air conducted to the face by air pipes. There was no other remedy for it, but to open the surfaee drive and sink a wir>ze upon it, so I have cleaned out the and timbered the same a distau . ji 140 feet, and I am at present sinking "a winze from the surface drive to No. 1 level, which I think will be completed by to-morrow night. This will afford good ventilation, and will act as a pass for filling in the ground as it becomes stoped out. I may also mention that the reef is much larger in this surface drive than in No. 1 lead, it beiag about 13 feet wide. It shews gold, freely, and I have obtained a few specimens from this part of the mine. I consider that the prospects of your mine look better at present than they have done since I took charge of it. I have had a great deal of dead work to contend with, but I am happy to say that it is now coming to a close. I may also inform you that I have a great difficulty in getting firewood. The water supply manage l informs me that they cannot supply " re " wood enough to keep the battery goiiy f e ' gularly."

So Stupid !—" My real number is sis, b« my hand -will bear squeezing," is what sfl| said to a young man at a glove counter. Ana the great thick-headed lunatic got her a of five and a-half gloves without Uncling onhow much squeezing her hand would bear. We would have worked on that job all «= summer but she should have had an oW- , " fit. Some people are so stupid. Armour Proof.—A high aim is curate. Sapoleon visited those sick of the play* "J order to prove that the man -who cool vanquish fear could vanquish the plague au* and he was right. 'Tis incredible what lorc= the will has in such cases ; it penetrates «e body, and puts it in a state of activity **£» repels all hurtful influences j -whilst fesr >" vitea and propagates them.
