VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

We understand that it is the intention of the Government to re arm the Constabulary and Volunteers with Snider rifles. The cavalry, artillery, and naval corps are tohave the Snider carbine, and the engineer and rifle companies the Sniderrifle—prcferenceof issue to the Volunteers will be given to effective companies. The re-arming will take some time to complete, but tho whole arrangements are expected to be carried into effect before tho next preliminary tiring for representatives. We also learn, says the Thame* Adrrrliier, that the cavalry chainEinn belt will be superseded by a carbine elt to be competed for by artillery, navals, and cavalry, the infantry champion belt to bo for engineer rifle companies, A.C., and militia.

The usual monthly parade by Major Gordon took place on June 22, in tho Market Square of tho following companies of Volunteers -.—Artillery, Scottish, nobson, and Victoria. There was a very fair muster. At the conclusion of the parade the companies marched through tho town, headed by their bauds. A presentation was afterwards made at the British Hotel to Mr. Melntyro, upon his resigning tho post of lieutenant of the Artillery corps.

Another handicap match took place at the Kauwaeranga rifle range on June 20, among the members of the Thames Scottish Volunteers. Tho ranges were 300 yards, 400 yards, and 500 yards, five shots each, and no sighting shot. The weather was favourable to good shooting and some magnificent scores wero made. Drum-Major Campbell was again to the front, closely pressed by Volunteer McLean, and although both men had to start at scratch and against pretty stiff odds, the former came in winner of the first prize, with the almost unprecedented score of 55 out of a possible GO points, McLean making a good sccond with 51. The following are the principal scores : —Campbell, 55; Mcl>can, 51 ; Heron, 51 ; McLeod, 47 ; Scott, 47 ; Forgie, 47 ; Messrs. Carpenter, Murray, Dey, and some of the other of the Company's shootists wero unable to firo. This company have just had eight valuable prizes presented to them for ritlo competition, including medals and cup.
