Tho Australasian colonies now own a fleet of about '2000 vessels, aggregating upwards of •-'•2:!,000 tons. A communication sent by Sir. Ferdinand do Lesseps to the Academy of Sciences at Paris, indicates that the Suez Canal has materially influenced tho climate of tlio country through which it passes. He says that while rain hardly ever fell on tho Isthmus of Suez twenty years ago, tho houses there hare now to be roofed with tiles imported from France.
