CITY COUNCIL.
'J'llK ordinary bi-monthly meeting of the City Council was held in the Brunswick Buildings yesterday afternoon. Present : Mis Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Daldy, Isaacs, Maeready, Cosgrave, Hurst, and liuchauan. Mjxctes.—The minutes of the previous meeting were read and continned. CowtEsros j>esck.—A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary, in reply to one from the Council, informing the Government of the intention to apply for a Gas Bill. The letter promised that the question should receive full consideration.—An application from Mr. J. Drown for permission to erect a smoke house, for iish-curing purposes, was granted, on condition that it should be removed if it was a nuisance to the neighbourhood. —Mr. John Grey again applied to have his lease cancelled, but the Council declined to take action in the matter. Watku Scri'i.v.—A letter was received from Mr. Goodall respecting the discovery of a tine spring on the Hospital lleserve, as already published. —The letter was referred to the Water Committee.—The following report was read from the Water Supply Committee :—" Your committee have authorised the purchase of land for pipe track through Mr. Young's property for LL'(X), and a memo, of agreement lias been r-'gned and a deposit of one-fourth paid. The sub-committee having failed to receive any communication from Mr. W. Motion, recommend the plans to bo carried out without any reference to his property. That the proposal for the erection of a tramway be abandoned. Your committee have obtained permission for the occupancy of the land known as the Hospital Keserve, and are taking steps to test the presence of water by having stones removed, and will shortly be enabled to report thereon. The Snperintendei t recommends the appointment of sonic person l>y the Council to act in conjunction with some one person appointed by the Government to value the Hospital Reserve, with a view to steps being taken to having a bill passed vesting the same in the Corporation, ior a price and on such terms as may be arranged. The committee report that steps are being taken to arrange with other persons concerned with the"'-l.ind for pipe tracks.—(Signed) F. L. Pumi:, Mayor.—On the motion of Councillor Daldy, the report was adopted ; and subsequently, Mr. Aitken was appointed valuer Oil behalf of the City Council re the proposed purchase of the Hospital lleserve. Cauv Stand.—A petition irom the carters applying for the removal of the stand from Fort street to lower Queen street, between the Metropolitan Hotel and the wharf, received, and referred to the Streets Committee. This concluded the business.
