An alarm has been caused at the Thames, whether upon suilieieut grounds remains to be seen. At .an adjourned weekly meeting of the Borough Council, on 24th October, the following letter from Mr. E. H. Power, dated from the ltegistrar's office, was read : "Gentlemen, —Several cases of diphtheria as causes of death having been reported to me as occurring in this district, though it may not lie my especial duty to report such to you, yet, in the absence of any information from resii.lcnt medical practitioners, 1 deemed it advisable to draw your attention to the fact. It is admitted that diphtheria is a highly infectious disease, and may be classed under clause 17 of the Public Health Act, 1572." [This clause provides a penalty oil medical practitioners for not giving uoticc of the occurrence of infectious diseases.] Now, a communication of this kind from such an authority upon so serious a matter, most persons will think, should leceivc all proper consideration, but because the .Mayor had been informed by two medical gentlemen that they knew of no cases of diphtheria in the district, the Registrar's communication was treated as of no eonscquetiee.
