Tbe mail steamer Tartar is now due from San Francisco, via Honolulu. The s.s. Southern Cross, Captain Sellars, arrived yesterday morning from Tauranca with a cargo of cattle and sheep, and several passengers. The New Zealand Shipping Co.'s fine new ship Walkato hauled alongside the wharf yesterday morning to discharge cargo. The ship is a credit to the Shipping Company. The cargo boat Waitara, built by Messrs. Sims and Brown for Messrs. Webster Brothers, of Waitara, is alongside Messrs. Fraser and Tinne's boiler-shop in Mechanics' ISay basin. She is being fitted by that firm with a 10 horse-power single high-pressure engine, with cylinder 10 inches in diameter, and multitubular boiler 5 feet in diameter, the work being carried ont under the supervision of Mr. Lodder, C.E. The steamer is expected to be ready for sea in a few days.
