BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board of Education was held yesterday afternoon. Present :—Dr. Campbell (in the ehair), Messrs. D. M. Luckie and P. A. Philips. The minutes were read and confirmed, and the following business: disposed of : — Teachers Association.—A communication respecting the training of teachers was read, and it was agreed that the Board thank the Teachers' Association for their communication with reference to pupil teachers, and have to remind the association that regulations on this subject already exist, and that when the time arrives for making further provision in that direction, the Board will take such steps as they shall deem necessary. Uri'Eii Waipu.—ln reference to the appointment of a teacher for this district, it was decided to inform the committee that Mr. Rowland is entitled, as a certiticated .teacher, to the preference, according to the regulations. Pakxell. —A letter was read from the Minister of Public Works, declining to accept liability for any compensation for land taken for railway purposes at Pamell.—The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee. Waimate.—ln reply to an application for £0 for rent, it Mas agreed to inform the committee that tlio Board are not in a position to supply buildings for districts where the attendance is so limited, and tliat ia such cases they must rely on the settlers to aid them in establishing schools. _Alexakdra.—A grant "of £25 for school repairs was refused, on the ground that the Board are not in a 'position to approi>riato funds for the purpose. MAiiuuiici Heads.—A sum of £5 was granted for school furniture, and an intimation made that maps, &c, will be supplied as usual, according to regulations. Ku:iKir.i. —The secretary was instructed to inform the committee that the attendance at the district school does not warrant the appointment of a teacher of needlework, as requested. City West, No. 2,—A letter was read from Mr. James Maxwell, complaining that his daughter had been dismissed from the school.—The matter was referred to the S'.ihui;] Committee.

Puhoi.—An application for an additional grant was refused, on the ground that the Board are not in a position to make any increase to the grant. Mercury Bat.—ln reply to an application, the secretary was instructed to inform the committee that clocks are not included in furniture supplied by the Board.—A blackboard and easel were ordered to be sent. Maketu. —An application was received from this district, asking for a cchool at Ararimu. Mangbre.—The Board decided that they could entertain no applications for buildings or rent, having no further available funds for the purpose. Waiotahi. —The opening of the Eureka school, and the appointment of Mr. McManus as teacher, on the understanding that the school was to be used for young children only, was approved. Manoeke.—lt was decided to inform the committee that school appointments could only be made on average attendance, in accordance with the regulations. Waiotahi. —It was decided to inform the committee that the Board considered the Shellback a town school, and that Mr. Maberly would be paid accordingly. Hamilton East. —The Board declined entertaining the proposal for a grant of a school building. School Reserves. —It was resolved to sanction the leasing, within a reasonable time, of the reserves in Symords-street, Epsom, Great North Road, Wyiiyard-sireet, and Grafton Road, for educational purposes. Awrru. —The Board decided to decline for the present the request for a sum of money for school alterations. Herd's Point, Hokianca.—The consideration of the appointment of a master, and the terms of his salary in the ease of half-time schools being proposed, was deferred. Titkaxua and Papakura Valley.—The consideration of increasing the school accommodation was deferred. Newton. —The question of repairs for St. David's School was also deferred. - Visitors to Schools. — The question having been raised as to the right of visitors to tho schools interfering with the school management or teachers, it was resolved to call the attention of school committees and others to clause 35 of tho Education Act, in accordance with which schools are open at all times during school hours to parents or guardians of children attending, to any member of the school tommittee, the Board, or the Inspector. Waikato Lands Office.—A communication was received from the Waikato Lands Office, informing the Board that after giving compensation for a road taken through the adjoining allotment, the remainder of lot 41, at Eazorback, would bo proclaimed an endowment for educational purposes. Otaka.—-An addition of £20 a year to the assistant teacher's salary was sanctiond. This concluded the business of the meeting.
