MURDEROUS ASSAULT.

One of those affrays which happen frequently in low brothels, and which may be expected by all who are foolish enough to enter such places, occurred on Wednesday evening. There is a place of this description (among many others) in the hollow beneath the embankment hi Upper Queen-street. On Wednesday evening last a Maori called at the police station, and gave information that a violent assault had been committed in the place mentioned. Constable Maroney was despatched, and on arriving at the house found the man was lying on the floor in an insensible condition, having received very serious injuries. The man's jawbone is broken, and his face greatly lacerated, in a manner wliich would indicate his having been kicked with extreme violence. Constable Maroney sent a message to Detective Jeffrey, who took a cab and went to the house, and removed the injured man to the station. Dr. Dawson was called in, and dressed the wounds. The man's jaw had been broken in two places, and he was suffering from numerous other injuries. His immediate removal to the Hospital was deemed necessary, and he was at once taken there. On being carefully examined, no hope whatever was expressed that he would reeover. During the whole of the day he remained in an unconscious condition, and was not expected to live till this morning. The name of the unfortunate man is as yet unknown. From the information we have been able to obtain, we understand that he was drunk in the brothel, when two men entered and assaulted him by kicking and jumping upon him while he lay on the ground. The two men were arrested yesterday by Detective Ternahan. Both of them are sailors, and came, out in the Rooparell. One of them, named John Pascoe, was arrested on the wharf yesterday morning, and the other in Official Bay later in the day. They are both young men. At present the charge entered against them is assault with violence; but should the assaulted man die from the injuries he has received, a graver charge will be substituted.
